It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Fred B. Chaney.

Fred was known for his wisdom, tenacity, entrepreneurial spirit, and extraordinary role in taking TEC beyond Wisconsin and Michigan. He acquired the rights to TEC and helped develop it into the worldwide organization now known as Vistage.

In 1968, Fred founded TEC 7, the first TEC group outside Wisconsin, and chaired it continuously through December 2025. The group became the gold standard against which many Chairs measured their own progress.

Fred had an extraordinary gift for recognizing people and possibilities. Thousands of lives were touched by the relationships and community he created.

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Fred returned there regularly for Keepers of the Flame. He loved the Chair community and always looked forward to the gathering. He often said Keepers was the place where he felt most understood.

At last year’s Keepers gathering, Fred was asked to describe the essence of TEC/Vistage. He replied, “Dear friends helping each other.”

When asked to expand on that thought, he said, “No. The more I add, the weaker it gets.”

Fred’s life profoundly affected ours and the lives of many thousands of others. His wisdom, friendship, and legacy will continue to live through the TEC/Vistage community he helped build.
